When it comes to bridging the gap between different Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems that rely on different, proprietary file formats, software applications such as 3D-Tool by 3D-Tool GmbH & Co. KG come indispensable. 3D-Tool is a perfect lightweight alternative to having a full-blown CAD solution, when the capability to view, analyze, quickly edit, and convert CAD models or even 2D drawings is all that matters.

Focused mainly on 3D representation, 3D-Tool makes possible to open, view, manipulate, and convert technical drawings (CAD files) in both 2D and 3D. To this end, 3D-Tool supports over two dozens of common CAD formats and versions thereof, with a differing level of support offered by each of the three versions of 3D-Tool. Using 3D-Tool, one can open up a CAD model in a number of different modes, explode assemblies, view parts or cross-sections, perform measurements in 2D or 3D, and even do some limited editing such as lining up parts, changing properties, or repairing 3D objects. And, most importantly, 3D-Tool allows to directly convert between the supported CAD formats, serving as a data exchange point that can connect workflows that rely on different CAD systems.

3D-Tool is a proprietary Microsoft Windows application that exists in three versions: Basic, Advanced, and Premium, each available in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors. Binary installers of 3D-Tool (14-day free trial) are available as direct downloads from the software's official website.
