The .cue extension self-explanatory represents cuesheet files that are often related to CD/DVD images and authoring. CUE files are plaintext and human-readable and serve the purpose of pointing to certain sections inside a disk image, using the special cuesheet syntax. CUE files define the image's tracklist, track names and duration as well as track mode and generally serve as a legend of the disk image.
Files with the .cue extension are very often found in company with various disk images, especially lossless Audio CD copies in the FLAC and APE format. CUE files are supported by many media players and often used by virtual CD/DVD software as metafiles for binary disk images, most often in the combined CUE/BIN format.
Contrary to popular belief, CUE files are not disk images themselves. They contain no audio or binary data and cannot be played, opened or mounted, unless they are in the same directory with the actual disk image. CUE's can be especially useful for extracting particular tracks from a media disk image.
