The primary association of the .pcd filename extension belongs to the Kodak Photo CD Image (.pcd) file format and type. Kodak Photo CD (PCD) is a proprietary format developed by Kodak for storing 35-mm film images scanned by their all-in-one scanner/printer units. In the past, customers of Kodak-equipped photolabs could receive digital copies of their photos as Photo CD's.
A .pcd file found on a Kodak Photo CD is a high-quality, high-resolution scan of a 35-mm film frame. Technically, every .pcd file stores multiple (usually, five) versions of the same image, each with a different pixel size, in its own PhotoYCC encoding.
Since long unsupported by Kodak, the legacy PCD image format still has varying degrees of support in bitmap image editors and viewers. There are both standalone converters and PCD import plugins that can open PCD images as well as convert them into the standard bitmap formats like TIFF or JPEG. In Microsoft Windows, general PCD support was provided by Kodak's "pcdlib.dll" library.
Another association of the .pcd extension belongs to the Point Cloud Format (PCD) and the related PCD File (.pcd) file type. PCD is an innovative file format developed in the scope of the Point Cloud Library (PCL), an open-source library for processing and visualizing 3D point cloud data. A PCD file can be an ASCII listing of point coordinates with a strictly formatted header, or a binary copy of the respective PCL's internal data array dumped to disk. PCL natively works with both versions of the PCD format.
Additionally, the .pcd extension occurs in association with the Pokemon WonderCard File (.pcd) file type/format used by PokeSav, a freeware Windows tool for editing Nintendo DS Pokemon game files. The .pcd file is a small binary file, representing a Pokemon WonderCard. Collections of such PCD WonderCards are available on the Internet.
