The .oga filename extension stands for the Ogg Audio Profile (.oga) file type and format. Ogg is an open and free multimedia container format developed by the Xiph.org foundation and standardized by IETF in RFC 3534. An Ogg container can be used with several codecs, both audio (Vorbis, Speex, FLAC) and video (Theora, Dirac).
Any .oga file is supposed to be a standard Ogg container with audio streams only. According to Xiph.org, the .oga extension should be assigned to Ogg audio files encoded with non-Vorbis codecs (FLAC, OggPCM, or Ghost). The conventional .ogg extension has been specifically reserved for Ogg/Vorbis audio files (Vorbis-encoded stream in Ogg container). Both .oga and .ogg file types share the same MIME type ("audio/ogg") and thus are often used interchangeably, counter to what Xiph.org recommends.
OGA files should be playable by any media player that supports Ogg in general. Some players refuse to recognize .oga audio files as Ogg containers, judging by the extension only. An .oga file can be 'converted' into a conventional .ogg file just by changing its extension, with no actual conversion required.
