The .z01 extension belongs to a series of sequential alphanumerical filename extensions used to identify parts of multipart, or multi-volume (also, split-volume) ZIP archives.
ZIP is a lossless data compression algorithm and archive file format currently supported by the vast majority of archive managers on all platforms. A regular ZIP archive is a single .zip file that contains compressed individual files, directories, or directory structures inside.
Besides regular archives, many ZIP archive managers support creation of multi-volume archives. These are ZIP archives that consist of multiple section files of equal size, arranged in a certain order through specific extensions assigned to them. Such extensions can follow several different patterns, depending on the archiving tool used (e.g., .z01, .z02, .zip.001).
Thus, a .z01 file is the second part of a multi-volume ZIP archive, implying at least the existence of the .z00 file (the first section). For successful extraction of data from a split-volume ZIP archive, all its part files (.z00, .z01, etc.) must be present in the same directory at the time of extraction.
