The .001 extension, like other similarly-formatted numeric extensions, is used to point out to a file's current state and position within an ordered sequence, rather than file format or file type. Such numeric extension is used to identify the first data chunk, or section of a series of such chunks resulted from a large file being byte-split into several smaller files.
A .001 file is the first data chunk in a series of two or more chunks. Any file of any format can be byte-split into an arbitrary number of chunks, while the original file can be restored only if all chunks are concatenated in their proper order. File splitting is used on large files to avoid compression and sometime for security reasons.
Such split files are well handled by most archive managers on all platforms. Alternatively, byte-split .001, .002, .003 etc. files can be easily rejoined with a simple command in CLI (Command-Line Interface). To this end, the 'copy' command with a /B switch could be used in Windows, while the 'cat' command would suffice in Unix/Linux/MacOS.
