What is the .U13 file type?

The .u13 filename extension primarily denotes the WISO Steuer-Sparbuch VAT Return 2012 (WISO Steuer-Sparbuch Umsatzsteuererklärung 2012, .u13) file type/format. WISO Steuer-Sparbuch is proprietary software published by Buhl Data Service GmbH and available commercially to taxpayers in Germany to help them prepare and submit their annual value-added tax (VAT) declarations (Umsatzsteuererklärung) for the current fiscal year (previous calendar year).

WISO Steuer-Sparbuch saves its tax return data files in a proprietary format using indexed extensions that match the target fiscal year (.u12 for 2011, .u13 for 2012, and so on). Thus, the .u13 file contains tax return data for the fiscal year 2012, prepared and saved in WISO Steuer-Sparbuch 2013. The .u13 file is only used for local data storage—the tax declaration itself is electronically submitted to the local tax office (Finanzamt) in a standard format. To open the .u13 file and access its contained tax return data, one must use WISO Steuer-Sparbuch 2013.

In the same area of taxpaying, the .u13 extension also stands for the UFile for Windows 2013 Data File (.u13) file type. It is used by UFile for Windows, a Microsoft Windows version of the commercial UFile tax return preparation software for Canada (UFile, Thomson Reuters). UFile for Windows is designed to facilitate preparation of the tax return forms that are required to be submitted annually to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) by each resident of Canada. In a proprietary format readable by UFile for Windows only, the .u13 file stores a person's tax return data for the year 2013. Such .u13 files cannot be used with UFile Online.
