U14 File Extension

What is the .U14 file type?

Similar to other alphanumerical filename extensions used for the same purpose, the extension .u14 primarily denotes the UFile 2014 Tax Return File (.u14) file type. This file type is associated with UFile, a tax return solution for Canadian taxpayers provided by Thomson Reuters Tax and Accounting Inc. UFile exists both as an online service and a Microsoft Windows application and allows to submit tax returns to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) using the CRA-approved NETFILE system. When using UFile, tax return data files are automatically assigned extensions depending on the tax year. Thus, the .u14 extension is given to 2014 tax return files prepared in UFile and saved locally for further reference. Such 2014 tax return data (.u14) can be opened in UFile or UFile ONLINE as well as imported in other tax-return preparation software (e.g. Turbotax).

Quite differently, the same .u14 extension is used by another tax return software product, the German-language WISO Steuer-Sparbuch by Buhl Data Service GmbH, to denote its 2013 VAT return files. The actual name of the file type is WISO Steuer-Sparbuch Umsatzsteuererklärung (WISO Steuer-Sparbuch Tax Return). The convention to use extensions like .u14 for VAT (and .s14 for income tax) return files existed in WISO Steuer-Sparbuch until version 2015 and were replaced by the .steuer2014 extension pattern.
