What is the .TEMP file type?

As an abbreviation of 'Temporary,' the .temp filename extension is assigned to various temporary files created by different programs in mobile and desktop environments. The .temp suffix is not associated with any specific file format and can be assigned to any file.

The .temp file is a temporary placeholder file, created automatically in the destination directory for the duration of a download, backup, or other file transfer operation. Most commonly, the .temp suffix designates large files or backup archives that have been incompletely downloaded or copied. For instance, .temp files are created on Android devices, when the Showbox application is used to download videos. Such files are assigned dual extensions like .mp4.temp, in which case the .temp suffix should be manually removed.

Besides, certain web browsers like Google Chrome are known to create .temp files en masse in their cache directories. In this case, TEMP files serve for local caching of Adobe Flash and other traffic-heavy objects. As such cache files tend to pile up quickly, taking up significant disk space, it is advised to clean browser caches periodically.
