SUB File Extension

Have a problem opening a .SUB file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what SUB files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .SUB file type?

The SUB file extension is commonly used for subtitle files in Micro DVD, Sub Viewer and VOB Sub formats named after the corresponding software applications in which they were created. SUB files represent text-based documents containing synchronized subtitle data for movies, video clips or TV programs.

SUB files usually consist of multiple lines describing text portions and their corresponding fixed video frames. The timing information is necessary to inform a digital media player when the corresponding subtitles should be displayed on the screen. There are also SUB files containing data in a graphic format; in this case, a SUB file is accompanied by a matching IDX file.

Alternatively, the SUB file extension can be used for sub channel data files created with the help of CloneCD application designed to make identical backup copies of all tracks located on CDs/DVDs. Such .sub files represent disc images and are used in conjunction with matching .ccd and .img files containing the same name prefix.
