The .lzh filename extension represents the LHA Compressed Archive (.lzh, .lha) file type and format. LZH is an old archive format, initially developed by K.Miki for his LArc tool and later re-used by H.Yoshizaki, the author of the LHarc (later, LHA) archiver. The .lzh extension was first used for archive files created with LHarc/LHA. Sometimes, LZH files are also denoted with the .lha extension.
The .lzh file is an LHarc/LHA compressed archive. Besides the original LHA archiver tool, initially released as freeware for MS-DOS and ported since to many operating systems, such files are recognized and can be opened and processed by many multi-format archive managers. Also, an almost equivalent open-source replacement of the LHA tool (Lhasa) exists.
The LZH archive format is still popular in Japan, and the Japanese version of Microsoft Windows provides native LZH support. In other Windows versions, the .lzh file type is often associated with a power archive manager (if installed), and .lzh archives can be opened with a double click or processed through Explorer's context menu.
