What is the .RW2 file type?
The filename extension .rw2 represents the Panasonic LUMIX Raw Image (.rw2, .raw) file type and the associated image format developed by Panasonic for their LUMIX digital compact still-image cameras such as DMC-G1/G2, DMC-FZ1000, etc. The same format is also used by certain Leica cameras, although with a different extension (.rwl).
The .rw2 file is a digital photographic picture taken with a Panasonic LUMIX camera and saved in the RW2 format with extensive metadata. It is a vendor-specific TIFF-like format designed to preserve the maximum of raw image data coming from the camera's sensor matrix. Similar to other raw formats, .rw2 images require post-processing and can be edited in a non-destructive way.
Panasonic provides their proprietary LUMIX RAW Codec to support the RW2 format on Microsoft Windows. Besides, RW2 images can be directly viewed and/or converted into standard image formats with several all-purpose image viewers as well as edited in advanced image editors that support raw camera formats. With Microsoft's Camera Codec Pack, .rw2 images can be directly viewed and thumbnailed in Windows Explorer (Windows 8.1).
