The .r85 extension represents the RAR/WinRAR Multi-Volume Archive file type. RAR is a proprietary data compression algorithm by E.Roshal and the name of a cross-platform command-line tool to process RAR archives, with WinRAR being its paid (shareware) Microsoft Windows GUI version.
RAR/WinRAR allows to create multi-volume, or split archives that consist of more than one file, generally of the same size. Normally, split volume part files are assigned the regular .rar extension, with the ".part[nnn]" index preceding it (e.g., "archive.part001.rar"). Previously, the old-style .r00—.r99 extension pattern was used for naming parts of split volume archives by default.
Thus, an .r85 file is the eighty-seventh volume of a (presumably, large) split RAR archive (the first volume always comes with the .rar extension, the second with .r00, and so on). To ensure successful extraction of data from a split archive, all its parts (.r85 and all previous files) must be present in the same directory, or their location known.
RAR archive parts like .r85 are supported by all archive managers that support the RAR format in general.
