The .mpg extension denotes the Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) audio and video compression format and the MPEG media file type. MPEG is an internationally standardized format and one of the most universally compatible and supported formats available.
There is much confusion around the .mpg (and .mpeg) extension. While this extension can be used to denote MPEG-1 Part 2 video files, it is most commonly associated with MPEG program stream (MPEG-PS) multiplexed audio/video files. Similarly to .avi and .mkv files, such .mpg files are containers incorporating encoded and compressed audio/video streams in an interleaved manner.
Multiplexed MPEG audio/video container files are used in DVD-Video disks, although with a different extension (.vob).
MPEG files can be played back by the majority of hardware and software media players on most user platforms, including portable devices. In many desktop user environments, the .mpg extension comes pre-associated with the system's default media player.
