The .p7s filename extension belongs to the S/MIME Detached Signature (.p7s) file type and format. S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) is an international standard for cryptographic protection of e-mail correspondence. S/MIME is based upon the Public Key Cryptography Standards (PKCS) by RSA Laboratories, mainly the PKCS #7 Cryptographic Message Syntax Standard.
A .p7s file is a detached PKCS #7 digital signature generated against the body of an e-mail message. It contains the sender's certificate and optionally additional CA certificates and is sent along as part of the resulting multipart/signed message. Detached signatures (.p7s) are used to check authenticity and integrity of e-mail messages as well as confirm identities of their senders. The message itself is not encrypted, is sent and can be read by its recipient in plaintext.
Most e-mail clients can automatically handle signed messages. Those e-mail clients that are not capable of properly processing S/MIME detached signatures (.p7s) present any such signature simply as an attached file with the filename "smime.p7s."
