The .ipk filename extension has its key association with the Itsy Software Package (.ipk, .opk) file type/format. Derived from Debian's dpkg, the Itsy Package Management System (ipkg) is a software distribution mechanism that became popular in embedded GNU/Linux distributions.
The .ipk file is an ipkg software archive. Such packages are widely used to add features, provide plugin modules, modify the default behavior, and other purposes on such devices as set-top boxes, multimedia receivers, wireless routers, etc. Most notably, ipkg is adopted in Dream Multimedia's Dreambox devices.
The structure of the .ipk file closely resembles that of a standard Debian package (.deb). It is a .tar archive, containing the "control.tar.gz" and "data.tar.gz" files as well as pre- and post-install scripts. IPK packages can be installed with the original ipkg (discontinued) program or its widely used fork, opkg.
There are sources of device-specific .ipk (.opk) packages on the Internet, with some of the maintained as repositories (e.g., the OpenWrt repository). Linux-driven devices would recognize .ipk packages and offer appropriate installation options.
Another occurrence of the .ipk extension relates to the Form Package (.ipk)–formerly, Informed Package–file type/format used with the FileNet Forms Manager software in the scope of IBM's comprehensive corporate platform FileNet. Here, the .ipk file is a container for electronic forms created in the FileNet eForms Designer and managed with the FileNet Forms Manager.
