What is the .NXM file type?

The .nxm filename extension belongs to the Nexus Mod Manager Mod Archive (.nxm) file type, with reference to Nexus Mod Manager (NMM), an open-source tool for managing custom modifications (usually referred to as 'mods') in video games. Having become popular mainly thanks to the MMORPG The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim by Bethesda Softworks, NNM is a Microsoft Windows application that enables gamers to manipulate mods for dozens of major games. For convenience, the modding portal Nexusmods associated with NMM provides support for the special nxm:// network protocol used to handling mods downloads directly in NMM.

An .nxm file is a mod archive intended to be downloaded and used with Nexus Mod Manager. Since it is a regular ZIP archive used as a wrapper for the mod's actual contents, such contents can be manually extracted and copied to the required game folder. If other mod managers such as Mod Organizer are installed on the same system, the .nxm file type and the nxm:// handler associations are usually redefined by the most recently installed tool. Nexus Mod Manager associates itself with the .nxm file type during installation and provides an option to associate with the NXM URL's.
