Primarily, the .slg filename extension represents the AutoCAD Status Log (.slg) file type used in AutoCAD, a well-established family of powerful and advanced Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools for different industries from Autodesk. As a complex software system AutoCAD uses logging extensively for troubleshooting and diagnostics purposes. In AutoCAD, the .slg file is a status log generated against an AutoCAD drawing (.dwg). It is a regular text file in which changes of the drawing's status are recorded. Like other drawing-specific log files, status logs (.slg) are created in the drawing's directory and use the drawing's filename.
The .slg extension also occurs in association with the Lowrance Sonar Log (.slg) file type and Lowrance's proprietary file format used for saving bathymetric mapping data obtained with Lowrance sonar devices (e.g., LMS-525cDF). An .slg file contains a raw binary record of multiple sonar pings and their echoes. When retrieved from a sonar device, such logs (.slg) can be accessed and exported into a text-based format, using the Lowrance SonarViewer tool. Besides, a third-party tool named EchoMap can analyze and visualize Lowrance sonar logs.
With reference to Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM), a commercial security solution for Microsoft Windows from Symantec, the .slg extension is assigned to SEPM database log files automatically created in the "Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\db" directory. Each .slg file in that folder is a dated backup copy of the main database log ("out.log") and may be safely removed.
SedLog, a geologist's tool for generating graphic sediment logs developed at Royal Holloway, University of London (RHUL) for Microsoft Windows, uses the .slg extension for its sediment log files. Saved in SedLog's own format, such SLG logs can be opened in SedLog and printed or published as PDF, SVG, or other standard formats.
Additionally, the .slg extension denotes 2D drawings made with SL-Geometriepaket, a CAD tool from SL-Automatisierungstechnik GmbH. Saved in a proprietary binary format, such .slg drawings can be directly used with SL's Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) tool named CAM-Modul.
