The 'VMware Virtual Machine BIOS Image' file type and format are the default association of the .nvram extension. The extension's name stands for Non-Volatile Random Access Memory (NVRAM), and NVRAM is a special type of writable computer memory that keeps its data without power. VMware is a well-established developer and provider of multi-platform virtualization solutions.
VMware virtualization software uses .nvram files to store BIOS (Basic Input-Output System) images for virtual machines (VM's) to run upon. Just like hardware machines, VM's go through a boot-up process that starts with BIOS initialization and POST (Power-On Self-Test). Having a machine's firmware in a loadable (and editable with special tools) file serves to emulate behavior of a specifically configured hardware machine for compatibility, testing or other purposes.
A .nvram file is a binary file with a BIOS firmware image to be used by a VMware VM. Such a NVRAM file would also store all BIOS settings made from within a VM. An NVRAM BIOS file used by a VM would be locked during the entire duration of a VM session.
