The .mp4a extension belongs to non-standard vendor-specific extensions introduced and promoted by Apple, Inc. The extension is used in association with the MPEG-4, Part 14 (ISO/IEC 14496-14:2003) file format, denoting the respective file type. MPEG-4 is the international standard for a series of different video/audio container formats. MPEG-4, Part 14 defines MPEG-4 container format with audio streams only.
An .mp4a file is an MPEG-4 container that contains one or several encoded and compressed audio track(-s). With MP4A audio files, the Apple Lossless Encoder (ALE) audio codec is typically used — it allows efficient compression without quality loss. The AAC audio codec can be used with MP4A files, too.
MP4A files are well suited for streaming and can be served as streams, as well as downloaded and played back as standalone tracks.
MP4A audio tracks can be played by Apple media players (Quicktime, iTunes) and all other players that support MPEG-4/ALE playback. However, for third-party players, changing the extension from .mp4a to .mp4 (or .m4a) may be required.
