Although the .m2ts filename extension stands for 'MPEG-2 Transport Stream,' it is specifically associated with the narrower BDAV (Blu-ray Disk Audio-Video) M2TS container format. BDAV is a modified version of the original MPEG-2 TS and the standard format for consumer Blu-Ray video disks.
An .m2ts file is a BDAV container holding digital multimedia data compressed with one of the several available video (H.262, H.264, VC-1) and audio (Dolby AC3, PCM etc.) compression codecs. One M2TS file can hold several video, audio and subtitle streams selectable at playback.
M2TS files are usually named like [xxxxx.m2ts] with five-digit numerical filenames. On a Blu-Ray disk, .m2ts files are in the "\BDAV\STREAM" or "\BDMV\STREAM\" directory.
HD camcorders (Sony and others) also use M2TS containers to save their AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding High Definition) video files. Due to the legacy 8.3 filename convention, AVCHD M2TS files are assigned the .mts extension.
Both BDAV and AVCHD files can be played by most major media players, with playback support depending on the actual codecs used (may require additional plugins or codecs).
