The .lng extension stands for 'LaNGuage' (LNG) and is primarily associated with interface language files and plugins used in a number of software titles to enable support of multiple interface languages.
LNG files are plaintext in most cases and can be edited directly with a text editor. However, some software products would use proprietary LNG formats such as the one Adobe Acrobat uses for its language-support plugins, in which case .lng files are binary.
Many plaintext .lng language files would use XML-based tag syntax. Being multilingual, .lng files are almost always Unicode-encoded.
LNG files are not generally meant to be opened directly, unless for direct editing. They would be used by applications instead. As a rule, application's .lng files must be placed in a certain directory so that the application can find them (most commonly, the installation directory or application data directories in the user's folder).
Alternatively, the .lng extension can also belong to model project files created by LINGO, a mathematic modeling suite for Windows/Unix developed by Lindo Systems, Inc. In this case, an .lng file can be opened with LINGO only, containing model-specific data.
