The Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) is an integral component of the Microsoft Windows operating system by Microsoft Corporation. It provides a subsystem and a complete interface for installing, updating, configuring, and removing Microsoft Windows components and third-party applications. The Windows Installer - Unicode specifically refers to the Unicode version of the executable that superseded its older ANSI variant. All recent Windows Installer versions fully support Unicode character encoding for all prompts, messages, GUI element labels, etc. For compatibility purposes, legacy ANSI versions may be available to software developers.
The main executable of Windows Installer is the MSIEXEC.EXE file, and Windows Installer packages are distributed as .msi, .msu or .exe files. When an attempt is made to install a Windows Installer-dependent application, an MSIEXEC.EXE process is launched to process the application's installation/removal script. All actions involving installation or removal of software using Windows Installer require elevated (administrator) privileges, which are requested through the Windows User Account Control (UAC).
Since version 5.0 (Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 and later), Windows Installer is integrated in the operating system, and no redistributable packages are provided. For previous versions, redistributable binaries are available for direct download from the official Microsoft Windows support portal. Currently, Windows Installer is the backend behind a large part of software installations on the Microsoft Windows platform, although application vendors may elect to use their own installers.
