The extension .z64 specifically denotes the Nintendo 64 ROM image (.z64) file type. Nintendo 64 was a once-popular game console that required hardware game cartridges to play and was successfully emulated in software on different host platforms. To run an emulator, a verbatim copy, or image, of an original game cartridge is required. By convention, such ROM images are assigned a generic .rom extension or an extension associated with the name of the target console.
A .z64 file is a binary blob that contains a Read-Only Memory (ROM) dump of an original Nintendo 64 game cartridge. Z64 files are typically 8 Mb in size. Being digital equivalents of game cartridges, such .z64 files are intended to be used with a dedicated Nintendo 64 software emulator, several independent implementations of which exist. Besides .z64, other extensions (.n64, the generic .rom) occur with Nintendo 64 ROM image files. Although creating and distributing ROM images such as .z64 may be controversial from the legal point of view, many sources of Nintendo 64 ROM images (.z64, .n64) are readily available on the Internet.
