The filename extension .xxx denotes the Singer Embroidery Design (.xxx) file type, with reference to Singer as a long-time renowned manufacturer of sewing appliances. Modern Singer sewing and emroidery machines are CPU-controlled and can use pre-programmed multi-color stitching sequences. An .xxx file is a machine embroidery design, digitized from a graphical image and saved in Singer's proprietary format. In binary form, the .xxx file defines the number, order, and color of stitches that must be made by the machine to follow the design. The XXX format is intended for, and directly compatible with, Singer sewing and embroidery machines like Singer Quantum XL-100 or Singer XL5000. Although a number of other embroidery formats (.psw, .che, etc.) are supported by the Singer stitching software, XXX still remains the most usable design format for Singer machines.
Alternatively, the .xxx extension is related to with the Corel Photo Album Panorama (.xxx) file type associated with the commercial Corel Photo Album software by Corel Corporation, the successor of the legacy Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album software. In Corel Photo Album, an .xxx file is a panoramic photo project created by joining several photographic pictures of the same object, taken from slightly different angles and thus allowing a broad, panorama-like view. Such .xxx panoramas can be created and opened in Corel Photo Album only, with an option to export the picture in a standard image format.
Quite differently, the .xxx extension also occurs in connection with the TeslaCrypt Ransomware, representing the generic TeslaCrypt Encrypted File (.xxx, .ttt) file type. TeslaCrypt is a type of Microsoft Windows malware that encrypts user files on an infected system using a strong encryption algorithm and demands a ransom for providing deciphering means (ransomware). In the case of TeslaCrypt, an .xxx file is an encrypted user file that must be decrypted, before it can be meaningfully opened again. Such TeslaCrypt-encrypted files (.xxx, .ttt) can be restored using several decryption tools provided by major antivirus companies.
