Files with the XPI file extension are compressed installation packages for Mozilla applications: the Firefox web browser, the SeaMonkey Internet suite and the Thunderbird email application. These archive files are used to install software extensions, themes or plugins to Mozilla applications.
XPI files let users customize their rather minimalistic Mozilla Firefox web browser and add new useful features to it. For example, you can download and install new skins, searching engines, RSS readers, PR indicators, dictionaries and so on. There are thousands of various add-ons hosted on the official Mozilla add-on site or private forums and blogs.
Files with the .xpi extension work similar to .zip files. They contain a number of compressed data files to be installed and an installation script or a chrome manifest at the root of the file. To unpack a file with the .xpi extension, you can simply drag and drop it to any open Firefox window or use a third-party file conversion/decompression program.
