Primarily, the .wbm extension is related to Webmin, a user-friendly yet powerful open-source Perl-based Unix/Linux administration tool. Webmin uses web interface (suggesting the use of a graphical web browser) and is module-based, with each module adding specific functionality. The .wbm extension does not define a distinct file format, as .wbm files are in fact uncompressed TAR container archives ('tarballs').
A .wbm file is a Webmin module file, usually distributed inside a GZIP archive container (.wbm.gz). The contained WBM file is a tarball with a directory that contains all files, specific for a given Webmin module. Among such files are Perl scripts (both as .cgi and as .pl files), HTML help files and other files that constitute a module. Webmin can recognize the .wbm extension directly.
WBM module files are meant to be opened/used specifically within Webmin, however, one can view and extract all contents of a .wbm archive file with any archive manager supporting the TAR format on any platform. All text files inside a WBM tarball will have Unix-style line endings.
The .wbm extension can also mean 'Wireless Bitmap' (WBM) and may be used to identify WBM image files. WBM is a bitmap format introduced by the Wireless Application Forum (WAF) as a standard image format for mobile devices, with several image types possible. Supported WBM images are Type 0 monochrome (1-bit) bitmaps with no compression. WBM images can also have the .wbmp extension.
The .wbm extension was also used in connection with the long-outdated WinBatch batch scripting software for Microsoft Windows 3.x to identify plaintext WinBatch macro (script) files.
