Files with the TORRENT extension are associated with the BitTorrent peer-to-peer file distribution channel created in 2001. This network is commonly used for sharing movies, eBooks, TV shows, music, and software online.
Typically, a .torrent file is very small - just a few kilobytes in size. You can't open it directly because its purpose is to show the location of the actual content online. The file contains metadata about the files and folders to be shared - their names, sizes and cryptographic hash values for the integrity verification.
To open a .torrent file, you need an Internet connection and a BitTorrent client - a special program that connects requesting users (or "leachers") with the people who are uploading this content (or "seeders"). The more seeders are online, the faster download you will get.
Since all distributed files are divided into small pieces, and these pieces are downloaded in a random fashion, you cannot open the content you need before its download is completed.
