The SWF file format is a common means of displaying and delivering interactive multimedia content over the Internet. Originally created by Macromedia, it was purchased by Adobe Systems in 2005.
Files with the .swf extension can include vector-based images, text, audio or video. Due to their compact size and as a consequence the ability to take a less amount of bandwidth, SWF files are frequently used for embedding animated objects (intros, demos, software tutorials, etc.) into websites to make them visually appealing for the end user.
The majority of popular Internet browsers are capable of opening .swf files using an appropriate plug-in. They also provide the Flash blocker option for users who don't want to see animated graphics on their screens.
In 2008, Adobe established the Open Screen Project which opened access to Flash technology for other software development groups. So if you need to edit the inside contents of a .swf file, you can use an Adobe program or a third-party alternative.
