The SRT file extension is an acronym for Subrip Text - a common text format used for storing subtitles that accompany the related video files. Since .srt files contain just some plain text, this format is considered to be "the most basic" subtitle format.
A file with the .srt extension represents a text file containing information about subtitles - their sequential text lines and specified time period when the subtitles should be displayed on-screen. The lines are numbered and separated from each other by a blank line.
An .srt file is typically bundled with a matching ripped movie and shares the same name. If there are subtitle files in several languages, they have a corresponding language appendix at the end of the name, for example Coolmovie.fr.srt for subtitles in French.
The .srt subtitle format is supported by most media players. If you don’t have software capable of opening and running .srt files synchronously with the video data stream, you can download additional applications online.
