Filename extensions like .r34 belong to the Multi-part RAR Archive Volume (.r01 through .r99) file type. RAR is a proprietary data compression algorithm and a CLI utility by E.Roshal. Its GUI-based Microsoft Windows counterpart is a well-known archive manager WinRAR. Support for multi-part archives is a standard functionality in RAR/WinRAR and most of the other RAR-compatible archivers.
A multi-part RAR archive consists of multiple smaller volumes that are easier to manage and transmit over networks. The older naming scheme calls for assigning each volume an extension with a numeric counter, like .r34, to indicate its order within the archive. As the first volume always receives the standard .rar extension, the .r34 file is the thirty-sixth part of the archive. Instead, the newer naming convention makes use of a dual extension pattern (.part1.rar).
RAR archive volumes, like .r34, can be opened and processed with RAR/WinRAR as well as a number of other archive managers. Although it is sometimes possible to partially extract data from an individual volume (e.g., .r34), complete extraction requires availability of all of the archive's volumes.
