The .psb filename extension is primarily bound up with the Adobe Photoshop (PS) Large Document ('Photoshop Big') format and the PSB file type, accordingly. PSB is a proprietary raster image format developed by Adobe Systems, Inc. for the use with Adobe PS to support images with a resolution higher than 30,000 by 30,000 pixels. Adobe PS has a user-selectable option to enable PSB support.
A .psb file is a large raster image file that uses lossless compression and stores extensive metadata just like PSD. PSB files can actually be huge (up to ~30 Gb or even more) and might pose special requirements to the filesystem in terms of a maximum file size limit. PSB files are nicknamed 'huge PSD.' PSB files are professionally used to store large-scale high-resolution charts, press-quality master copies of posters, hangers etc.
Due to their size, there is a very limited support of PSB files outside Adobe PS, including thumbnail creation. The default association of the .psb extension in Windows would be Adobe PS (if installed and PSB support enabled).
Alternatively, the .psb extension is used to denote plaintext PowerDivX (PSB) subtitles created with PowerDivX, a once popular media player. PSB is now a rather obscure format, yet .psb subtitles are still supported by some players (like VLC).
