What is the .OGM file type?

The .ogm extension stands for the Ogg Media (OGM) format and file type. Developed as an independent expansion of the Xiph.org's Ogg container specification, Ogg Media (OGM) is focused on extending codec support to include DirectShow. Never endorsed by Xiph.org, OGM is not directly compatible with OGG.

OGM is a container format, and so an .ogm file is a container that can have several differently encoded audio and/or video tracks (streams) inside it. Most commonly—but not necessarily—OGM files contain streams encoded with open Ogg codecs, such as Vorbis (audio), Theora (video), and others. An OGM container can accommodate streams encoded with other, even proprietary, codecs (e.g., DivX), too.

Usually, an .ogm wrapper includes a single video track and several audio tracks in different languages that can be switched during playback. OGM is similar to another container format, MKV—although less popular.

OGM files can generally be played by all major media players—or any player that supports OGM. The .ogm file type often gets associated with one or another multi-format media player, when supported file types are claimed for handling by that player.
