The .ogg extension is consistently associated with the OGG multimedia file format and files in this format. The OGG format is an open, free and unpatented container-type format for compression and distribution of video and audio media. It is especially well suited for handling streamed media. The OGG format is promoted by Xiph.org, an open-source community.
Following the Xiph.org recommendation (2007), the .ogg extension itself should be used for Vorbis-encoded audio files only, denoting the Ogg Vorbis file type. Thus, a typical .ogg file is an audio recording compressed with the lossy Vorbis algorithm inside an OGG container.
While similar to other lossy audio formats like MP3 and AAC, the Ogg Vorbis format would typically give smaller file sizes and better sound quality at the same bitrate.
Because of its free and open status, there is a solid native and plugin support for the OGG format by a host of software and hardware media players on virtually any user platform, including portable devices.
