MXF stands for Material Exchange file format. It was created by broadcasting industry giants with the aim to obtain a universal file format that could enable media content interchange across different platforms - servers, workstations and similar digital editing equipment used in TV production.
MXF files represent containers for storing video and audio data as well as other bitstreams. They can also include related metadata for description of media content within that .mxf file. MXF files don't provide any compression of their own, so it is possible to apply an external compression scheme to reduce size of the package.
Files labeled with the .mxf extension are considered to be digital equivalents of video tapes. They are often used to record professional high-definition videos with the purpose to implement them in computer systems and other devices. Since MXF is an open cross-platform file format, its specification is available to all interested users and software developers.
