MRW File Extension

Have a problem opening a .MRW file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what MRW files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .MRW file type?

The filename extension .mrw denotes the Minolta RAW Camera Image (.mrw) file type and format. MRW is a proprietary file format by Konica Minolta formerly used by a range of older Konica Minolta higher-end photo cameras like Dynax 7D and similar. Konica Minolta completely shut down its photo camera business line in 2006, and no support for Minolta cameras and software has been provided since 2010.

An .mrw file is a digital picture taken by one the Konica Minolta cameras. It contains unprocessed bitmap data obtained directly from the camera's matrix. Similar to other vendor-specific raw formats, .mrw images were intended to be opened using Konica Minolta's proprietary software (no longer available). Thanks to several successful reverse-engineering efforts, MRW images can be directly opened by several image viewers and major bitmap graphics editors as well as converted to other, standard formats (including DNG). On Microsoft Windows, native support for many raw camera image formats, including .mrw, can be added by installing the official Microsoft Camera Codec Pack, available from Microsoft Corp. as a free download.
