MPEG4 File Extension

Have a problem opening a .MPEG4 file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what MPEG4 files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .MPEG4 file type?

The .mpeg4 filename extension is a non-standard representation of the MPEG-4 Video (.mp4) file type, with reference to the standardized MPEG-4 multimedia container file format (MPEG-4 Part 14; ISO/IEC 14496-14:2003). An MPEG-4 container incorporates video, audio, and subtitle tracks as well as static bitmap images and defines the way the tracks are multiplexed and packaged. The most common codec combination is H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 + AAC (Advanced Audio Coding).

A file with the .mpeg4 extension is the same as the .mp4 file. The .mpeg4 extension itself is used as a non-standard, makeshift way of denoting MPEG-4 video files that are specially produced for portable multimedia devices, with a rather small video size and a particular codec combination.

By their format, such .mpeg4 files should be playable in the vast majority of media players, since nearly all of them support the standard MPEG-4 container format and its most common codecs. If the .mpeg4 file appears unrecognizable because of its non-standard filename suffix, the extension should be manually changed to .mp4. Generally, the use of the .mpeg4 extension for MPEG-4 videos should be avoided.
