MOVIE is a proprietary QuickTime file format created by Apple, Inc. Files with the .movie extension are used for storing practically all types of media data, including audio, video, still images, and text information (for example, subtitles or notes). Movie files may also contain references to media streams located in other files.
Movie files store multiple pieces of video, audio and other media data in separate tracks that have their own pre-defined playback rate and duration time. Since the tracks are supposed to run synchronously, they usually have the same or related playback rate and duration settings. The inner information is arranged in containers called atoms.
Even though QuickTime file formats were originally developed for use on Apple computers, it is possible to run a .movie file under a non-Macintosh environment. If you can't open files with the .movie extension on your machine, take advantage of software applications designed to convert .movie files into another commonly-supported media format.
