The MOV file format enables saving movies and multimedia files to data storage devices. This compression scheme is one of the oldest ones - it was created by Apple Computer Inc. for their proprietary QuickTime multimedia framework in 1998 and became the basis for many other video file formats developed later.
A file labeled with the .mov extension represents a media data container that includes digitally-encoded video, audio, animation, effects or text (like subtitles) tracks maintained in a graded order. That arranged structure of independent tracks makes the file editing process simpler and faster. There is no need to rewrite all your data after their modification.
Even though the .mov file format was initially developed and maintained by Apple, nowadays it is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows platforms. However, if your media player refuses to open and access .mov files by default, you may need to install an additional software package to export them into other common video formats.
