The verbose .miniso filename extension belongs to the proprietary .miniso DVD/Blu-ray mini-image format developed and introduced by Fengtao Software in the scope of their commercial DVDFab software. The DVDFab series includes a range of tools to copy, compress, and transcode protected DVD and Blu-ray movies. Because of advanced protection removal features, the use of DVDFab may be considered illegal in some countries.
A .miniso file is a relatively small (several megabytes) binary file. Technically, it is a 'mini-ISO' image that stores only a disk's header instead of its full copy. Such .miniso mini-images can be used only with their associated Blu-ray folders, with mounting capability provided by Fengtao's freeware DVDFab Virtual Drive utility.
In every Blu-ray folder created by copying a Blu-ray disk onto a hard drive, DVDFab creates a .miniso file. The .miniso file serves to enable playback of local Blu-ray folders even with those media players that do not support that natively. It is done by mounting the .miniso image onto a virtual drive, effectively connecting the associated the Blu-ray folder and making it look like if it were an actual Blu-ray disk.
