Files with the INX file extension are commonly associated with the Adobe InDesign software application created by Adobe Systems. INX files represent XML-based documents providing information about a particular InDesign (.indd) file: the number of pages in the document, their contents and settings, guides, and so on.
The INX file format is mostly used with the InDesign’s Save Backwards feature enabling users to export documents into the INX format and then send them to anyone who uses a previous version of the program. In InDesign CS4 and later, the Interchange INX format was replaced by the IDML (InDesign Markup Language) file format.
Alternatively, files with the .inx filename extension can represent executable compiled rules files that are included in InstallShield software installation packages for Windows PCs. Such .inx files store a set of installation instructions for the installer. They are not supposed to be run directly and require additional decompiling software to be opened manually.
