What is the .INDD file type?
The .indd extension belongs to the Adobe InDesign Document (INDD) file format/type. Adobe InDesign is a full-scale commercial desktop publishing application for MS Windows/Mac OS X by Adobe, part of Adobe CS (Creative Suite). To store project files, InDesign uses its native proprietary INDD format.
An .indd file is a binary InDesign project file with page layout design, e.g. representing a poster, book, brochure, flyer, etc. INDD files may contain multiple pages, embedded bitmap and vector graphics, color management settings, document metadata, etc.
Most .indd files incorporate small bitmap preview images that are automatically generated by InDesign and saved for each document's page. There are utilities that can limitedly display contents of INDD files, basing on such thumbnails.
INDD documents can be natively opened, viewed and edited with Adobe InDesign or InCopy only. From within Adobe InDesign, INDD documents can also be exported to other formats. For viewing compatibility, .indd documents should be distributed along with their PDF versions, which can easily be created through virtual PDF printers or online services.
