The .hes filename extension occurs in association with the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine Chiptune format (also referred to as HES) and is used to denote HES chiptune files (.hes). PC Engine is the original Japanese name of an 8-bit game console by NEC Home Electronics and Hudson Soft marketed in late 1980's in both Japan and USA. In the US, it was known as TurboGrafx-16. HES is an artificial file format created for the purpose of extracting chiptune music from the original TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine games.
An .hes file is a binary data file that contains a stripped version of an original game ROM, with only game music data and the player executable code left. Any HES file can be loaded as a ROM image and played in a TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine emulator. With the use of special plugins like NEZplug, HES chiptunes can also be played by general-purpose multimedia players and converted to a waveform format (WAV). Entire collections of TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine chiptunes (.hes) are maintained on the Internet by chiptune enthusiasts and game console emulation communities.
