FAX File Extension

Have a problem opening a .FAX file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what FAX files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .FAX file type?

Conventionally, the .fax extension is associated with the Group 3/4 Facsimile (Fax) Document (FAX) file type/format used by many applications on different operating systems. The digital facsimile image format and transmission procedure are governed by several ITU (International Telecommunications Union) Recommendations (T.30, T.38, T.4).

A .fax file contains a bitmap image of a document transmitted and/or received by means of a facsimile (fax) communication session. Depending on line conditions and fax machine/software settings, .fax images can come in different vertical and horizontal pixel resolution grades.

In most cases (but not always), a .fax file is a TIFF image with a different extension. As a TIFF image, a FAX file can have more than one page.

FAX images are recognized and can be displayed by most image viewers and fax management programs. In MS Windows, .fax files can be opened and displayed natively with the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer tool (Windows XP).
