The .f4v extension denotes the Adobe Flash Video File (F4V) format and its respective file type (.f4v). F4V is a proprietary multimedia container format by Adobe and part of the immensely popular Adobe Flash multimedia hosting/delivery technology. In addition to the older FLV, F4V is the newer Flash Video format based upon the MPEG-4 Part 12 base media file format standard (ISO/IEC 14496-12). Optimized for streaming, F4V allows to serve multimedia content with variable quality, depending on the client-side bandwidth.
An .f4v file is a F4V multimedia (video and audio) container. Most commonly, F4V files use the H.264/AAC codec pair. F4V files are normally meant to be hosted on multimedia web sites, rather than used as standalone entities. On the Web, F4V Flash Video content is playable via the Adobe Flash Player browser plugin, available for most modern browsers and operating systems, except Apple iOS.
There are tools (incl. browser plugins) that allow to download F4V video from major hosting sites like YouTube and others. Local .f4v files are playable with media players that support Flash Video, or they can be converted into other video formats.
