The .f4f extension is definitively associated with the F4V Flash Video Fragment (F4F) file type. Flash Video is a hugely popular proprietary content-delivery technology by Adobe that has become a de facto standard in HTTP streaming. Flash Video content is supported/provided by all major news and entertainment sites worldwide.
All HTTP-streamed Flash Video content is playable with free Adobe Flash Player browser plugins, available from Adobe for multiple platforms and OS'es.
Based upon MPEG-4 Part 10, F4V is the newer Flash Video format that uses the patented H.264 video and MP3/AAC audio compression codecs. When streamed, F4V files are broken down into a number of small fragments of equal duration (e.g., 4 sec each). Such fragments are downloaded by an HTTP client to the local cache and played back by the Flash Video plugin in sequence as a single video.
Thus, a .f4f file is a F4V fragment that can be opened and played back with any F4V-compliant media player. To obtain a single contiguous video file, any downloaded F4F fragments have to be re-joined. It can be done with several converter utilities.
