The .eps extension denotes files in the Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) format, a proprietary vector graphics format introduced and developed by Adobe Systems, Inc. EPS is fully based upon PostScript (PS), a proprietary vector graphics and printer control language by the same company.
An .eps file is a definition of a vector image through a series of PS instructions enclosed into a special rectangular 'BoundingBox' container. This way, an EPS image is a standalone entity and can be embedded into another set of PS instructions.
An EPS file usually contains a raster and/or vector preview image. There are several preview formats used on different platforms, limiting EPS portability. EPS files with no previews can be printed directly to a PS printer.
The EPS format is the native format for earlier versions of Adobe Illustrator (AI). Currently, EPS files are supported by many commercial and free vector image processing editors and suites on many desktop platforms. Besides, EPS images can be imported into many office suites, including MS Office.
