DXF File Extension

Have a problem opening a .DXF file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what DXF files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .DXF file type?

DXF is an open source data file format used to store vector graphic images as well as text fonts and 3D objects. The DXF format was created by Autodesk, Inc. in 1982 with the purpose of sharing drawings between their AutoCAD software and similar computer aided drafting applications.

The DXF file format has been considered as a universal drawing exchange format for a long time. However, in recent years its popularity has decreased because of the inability of .dxf files to support complex CAD elements such as dynamic blocks.

DXF files are usually stored as 7-bit text documents. They are composed of up to seven sections that in turn contain a set of groups. Each group takes two lines: the first one is the group code and the second one represents their associated values required for data interpretation.

DXF files are available in an ASCII or binary form. Even though the binary variants are 20-30% smaller and take less time to import/export, they are rarely used. There have been many updates of the DXF format since its first release, so file specifications may vary from release to release.
