Representing the Canon Raw Image (.crw, .cr2) file type, the .crw filename extension belongs to one of the two Canon's raw image formats, CRW. Also referred to as the 'Camera Image File Format' (CIFF), CRW was used in several earlier models of Canon's still-image cameras (e.g., Canon EOS 10D), until superseded by the newer, enhanced CR2 format.
The .crw file is a CRW raw image that contains unprocessed pixel data from a camera's CMOS sensor and requires developing. Each .crw image has its companion thumbnail (.thm) file in which a small preview JPEG image and EXIF metadata are stored. Besides Canon's software, .crw files can be opened and viewed in several multi-format image viewers, as well as imported in graphics editors via plugins (e.g., Adobe Camera Raw Plugin). On Microsoft Windows 7 and later, installation of the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack provides support for most camera raw formats, including Canon's CRW and CR2.
Canon cameras with the CHDK (Canon Hacker's Development Kit) software installed also use the .crw and .cr2 extensions for their raw images which are, however, incompatible with the original Canon formats.
