The .cfm filename extension associates with the ColdFusion Markup Document (CFM) file type. ColdFusion is a commercial IDE and server environment by Adobe Systems (initially developed by Allaire) targeted at development and hosting of rich web applications. For interweaving static HTML with dynamically generated content, ColdFusion uses the ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML). CFML is similar to PHP, ASP.NET, and other server-side scripting languages. On ColdFusion-powered websites, pages are normally represented by CFM files (.cfm).
A .cfm file is a CFML document, a text-based file in which plain HTML is combined with CFML tags and inserts. Any CFM page must be first processed by the ColdFusion server engine, before the page is served to a client. Web servers treat .cfm files specially, basing on their MIME type.
With the knowledge of CFML, CFM web pages can be authored in any text editor. Besides, there are a lot of advanced editors/IDE's that fully support ColdFusion. Outside ColdFusion server environment, a standalone .cfm file can be opened with a text editor or partially viewed with a web browser by changing the extension to .htm(l).
